Latin music is an Afro-Euro derivative music o There are different South American styles o There is strongly layered rhythm o There are many drum sets which is very African In the early 60’s the “rock beat” is so sharply defined o It becomes much more distinct o There is a basic change in rhythm o It is straight up and down rhythm Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” has the straight up and down rhythm o It is one of the earliest to have the distinct rock beat o Used as a listening example o The record companies saw him as too rock and roll/ rhythm and blues He ended up at NY with a company that specialized in Latin music o He was a writer, composer, and producer Richie Valens who was the first Latino Rock star and had a fusion of Latin rhythm in his music o Had fusion of Latin rhythm in his music o Buddy Holly worked with him o He had been playing this music all of his life, he was in his family band o The 2 wood blocks that are played are called the “clave” o “La Bamba” is a listening example, it is a recognizable song The sub genre of rock was this “dance crazed music” o It started many fads through TV o Started the Hula Hoop fad o Fes Parker played in movies (1950’s) as both Davie Crocket and Daniel Boom The Davie Crocket hat (raccoon hat) came out of this and became a big fad
