Please use the definition inthe book and your own knowledge to define the terms.Chapter 16Reconstruction- The federal government’s attempts to resolve the issues resulting from the end of the civil war. The Reconstruction era was the period in American history which lasted from 1863 to 1877.Ku Klux Klan- A quasi-military force formed after the civil war by former Confederate soldiers to resist racial integration and preserve white supremacy. The group reformed in 1915 and sporadically returned to prominence throughout the 19 and 20 centuries.Freedman’s Bureau- Government agency designed to create a new social order by government mandate. The Bureau provided freedmen with education, food, medical care, and access to the justice system. Ten-Percent Plan- Issued by Lincoln in 1863 that offered amnesty to any southerner who proclaimed loyalty to the union and support of the emancipation of slaves. Once 10% of a state’s voters in election of 1860 signed the oath. Wade-Davis Bill- A bill that would have allowed a southern state back into the union after 50% of the population had taken the loyalty oath. Iron-clad oath- Oath to be taken by Southerners to testify that they had never voluntary aided orabetted the rebellion.Black codes- Post-Civil War laws specially written to govern the behavior of African American. Modeled on the slave codes that existed before the Civil War.Radical Republicans- Wing of the Republican Party most hostile slavery.Civil Rights Act- Bill granting all citizens mandatory rights. Regardless of racial consideration designed to counteract the South’s new black codes.
Hannah Sharkey HIST1301E02Congressional Reconstruction- Phase of Reconstruction during which Radical Republicans wielded more power than the president. It allowed for the passage of the 14thand 15thAmendments and the Military Reconstruction Act.13thAmendment- Ended slavery across the US as part of the Reconstruction Era. Made it punishable by law to have slaves 14thAmendment- Passed in 1868 extended the rights to all born American citizens including African Americans and former slaves’ equal rights. It gives them equal protection under the law, and it was created to the better understanding of new freedom for former slaves. Military Reconstruction Act- Divided former rebel states, with the expansion of Tennessee intofive military districts. A military commander took control of the state governments and federal soldiers enforced the law and kept order.
