Chapter 17 WebLab#2 “Electric Field” * Go to the following website: http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/applets/nforcefield.html * Click and drag one of the yellow “test charges” and note how the magnitude and direction of the force on the particle changes. * Double click on the white background. Choose “New Terminal”. Double click on the new charge. Choose “positive”. Click and drag the new terminal around and note how it affects the force on the test charges. * Drag your three charges so that they line up in a row, with the two positive charges next to each other. Move a test charge slowly along the line of the charges, and note how the strength and direction of the force changes.

Unformatted text preview: * Repeat with the negative charge between the two positive charges. Questions: 1) What is the sign of the test charge? How do you know? 2) How does the magnitude of the force depend on distance? 3) Describe how the magnitude and direction of the force changes as you move the test charge along the line between the three charges. Where is the force really big? Really small? Zero? A local minimum? A local maximum? 4) On the graph below, plot the electrostatic force vs. position. Positive y-values are for forces acting to the right. 5) On the graph below, plot the electrostatic force vs. position. Positive y-values are for forces acting to the right. F x F x...
