OUTLINES FOR BIOLOGY 1201 Sections 003 and 004 Fall 2009 DR. STEVEN POMARICO 1A Chapter 1 – Themes in the Study of Life About 2 million species have been identified and named!! WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT SPECIES THERE ARE MANY SIMILARITIES (see fig 1.3). these species are somehow modified 1. Evolution is a central theme in biology. The Nature of Science: The Story of Darwin – 22.1.1 Evolution is a central theme in biology. o The genetic makeup of a population slowly changes overtime All come from natural selection Its natural for variability to occur The ability to evolve is built into organisms. Populations of organisms evolve. o -organisms within a species are variable (e.g., some are tall some are short) o -variability means some are “better” suited to survival. o -variability comes from the genes and genes are inherited. o Conclusion: More “good” genes survive and therefore the population changes. (Survival of the Fittest)

Built in natural to population because the fitness comes from the genes. 2. Life contains an order of structural levels with each level building on the levels beneath it. Hierarchy of biological organization (see fig 1.4) ( the definitions for these are handled separately, here you should concentrate on the organization ) o Every organism is represented in this hierarchy -Subatomic particles -Atoms
