Inequality in the Family Women in the Labor Force o Fertility rates in the US have plummeted. o Marriage Rates have also dropped. o There is no academic consensus on the effect of women working on the family or children. The Second Shift o Women have entered the workplace more than ever before, but that has not decreased the workload for many women. o Many women must continue to do a majority of the housework in addition to a job; Hochschild called this the “ Second Shift .” Fair Families o Fair Families are families that exist in both the public and private spheres. o Because of their equal interest in family and work, they are redefining gender in the family. o They have emerged as a solution to the complex working lives of modern families . Single Mothers o Misunderstandings about Single Mothers Not Welfare Queens Most women surveyed in 2004 did not want to be on welfare benefits Most welfare mothers off welfare in 2 years, almost all welfare mothers are off in 8 years
