Social Control – Deviance o Deviance – to go against the rules o Social Deviance is any transgression away from social norms Facial Tattoos No norms Indirect means of suicide o Deviance can be both formal (breaking laws) and informal (breaking social norms) Murder is formal o Norms are fluid and can vary from society to society Functionalist Approach o Use to exam deviance o Functionalism – organism view of society where the institutions (organs)develop to meet a social need Explains the existence of societal parts by the function they perform Social Cohesion o Social cohesion describes the strength of the social bonds that people share through relations and day to day interactions. o Think about social cohesion as the magnitude of the bond o Mechanical solidarity is a social cohesion based in sameness Pre-modern society such as feudalism: the only thing that differentiated people was the class statuses. Within each social class, there is social cohesion
