Copycat violence If the media gives great publicity to violent acts, violent crimes in the country increase Psychological Effects of Violent Video Games Watching TV vs. video games o Playing violent videogames is active, you move the players, you make the violence happen o YES it is more likely to affect a teenage boy’s attitude & maybe even his behavior Researchers Chad Mahood & Mike Yao used “Grand Theft Auto 3” in an experiment with college students Control group saw police kill criminal Experimental group saw criminal kill police Students in experimental group had more negative views of police after watching this scene CONCLUSION: violence against police in “Grand Theft Auto” primed students to think more negatively about police Priming theory o Everyone who plays violent video games might have aggressive thoughts, but priming theory does NOT predict that a person will go out & commit murder in real life Catalytic theory PROBLEM
