Summary of Somatoform Disorders Unintentional (unconscious) o Pain Disorder Psychological factors play a major role in the onset, maintenance, and severity of physical pain. The pain causes significant distress or impairment o Body Dysmorphic Disorder People are preoccupied with an imagined or exaggerated defect in their appearance o Hypochondriasis A preoccupation with fears of having a serious disease o Somatization Disorder Defined by multiple, recurrent somatic complaints that have no apparent physical explanation but still cause the person to seek treatment o Conversion Disorder Sensory or motor symptoms begin suddenly, such as loss of vision or paralysis. The symptoms suggest an illness related to neurological damage, but medical tests show the person is “fine”. Intentional (Conscious) o Malingering (clear motivation) Physical incapacity faked to avoid responsibility o Factitious Disorder (unclear motivation) Intentionally produced symptoms Munchausen by Proxy Topics covered on Exam Anxiety (Ch 5) o Panic Disorder is characterized by frequent panic attacks that are unrelated to specific situations and by worrying about having more panic attacks Agoraphobia is defined by anxiety about situations in which it would be embarrassing or difficult to escape if panic symptoms occurred; often the person fears public places where it would be embarrassing to have an attack o EMDR o Types of Disorders (7)
