Luis Hernandez Chemistry 26 May 12, 2010 Instrument lab 2 Introduction: In this experiment we had to determine the rate of the reaction of FD&C Blue#1, a food coloring, and Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl), which is the active ingredient in Chrlorox bleach. We accomplished this by reacting a certain concentration of FD&C Blue#1 with a certain volume of bleach. By trial and error we were able to control the concentrations and volumes of the reactants. We then had to manipulated the volumes of the reactants to extend the rate of the reaction for over ten minutes to gather sufficient data we needed for the entire experiment. We measured the absorbance of the solution with a spectrometer at the wavelength of 650 nm. Materials and Instrumentation: Spectrometer Stop watch Beakers Test tube pipette Distilled water Bleach Procedure: 1. Dilute 1mL of FD&C Blue#1in 69mL of distilled water. This was our stock solution for our dye. 2.
