Family Systems
In this case study, “Using a Family Systems Approach with an Adoptive Family of a
Child with Special Needs,” the Laurent family is talk about, and in this family Andre, the father,
and Marie, the mother adopts Marie’s extended nephew, Michael. They adopted him due to them
having an earthquake in Haiti, which killed Michael’s entire family. Both of the parents, Andre
and Marie, are immigrants from Haiti. Due to Andre being in the country longer than Marie, he is
more fluent in English than she is, he is also more aware of the school systems in which they
reside in. With Michael being new to the country he is having mixed emotions, from having to
deal with the loss of his whole family to having to get used to of being in a new country. Not
only that, he has also been diagnosed with a post-traumatic stress disorder. Which is
understandable considering what he has been through and now has to endure.
The microsystem has been created in the adoption of Michael, and the parents,
Andre and Marie, go from being a couple straight to becoming a family unit with a few different
family subsystems. In the first subsystem, is the relationship between Marie and Michael, needs
