The Ford Pinto Case 2 In the early 70’s the dilemma involving the explosion of Ford Pinto’s, due to a defective fuel system design, led to the debate of many issues, one being Ford’s unethical decision not to upgrade their fuel system. The Ford Pinto appeared on the market in 1970, and sales of the car were excellent for the first few years. However, these early model Pinto’s had problems with leaking fuel and catching on fire after minor rear-end collisions, which led to many injuries and deaths. Unfortunately, during the production of the Pinto, there was no National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA) rear- end impact testing on new vehicles. It was not until 1976 that the NHTSA Standard 301 related to rear impact went into effect, (Birsch, 1994). Although Ford had access to a new design which would reduce the potential of the Ford Pinto from exploding, the company chose not to implement the design, which would have resulted in less deaths and injuries.
