School Uniforms 2 School Uniforms Trevon Smith, a 7th grade student at Ruffner Middle School, located in Norfolk, VA, was a straight A student. His single mother, Yvonne Smith, had a nice salary working for the state, near downtown Petersburg. Yvonne was blessed to have a son, her only son, who achieved high academically. For those achievements, Ms. Smith usually rewarded her son with gifts such as, video games, cell phones, and clothing. Trevon loved the latest fashion, and wore all the brand name clothing, Sean John, Roca Wear, Polo, etc. One morning, while on his way to school, Trevon noticed a group of kids a block away from the school. They started pointing and asking Trevon about his $150 Roca Wear jeans. Trevon ignored the comments, and walked past the kids. Once he walked past them, all Trevon remembers is waking up to an unfamiliar, white man telling him he would be ok, and that the ambulance is on the way. Trevon was partially nude, and bleeding from his head. The only clothes remaining on his body was his undershirt, and his boxer briefs. Trevon was brutally beat because of the clothing on his back, and the shoes on his feet. Trevon is lucky his life was spared, but hundreds of kids like Trevon, are not as lucky. According to Jet Magazine (2007), this is one of thousands of stories reported daily to local police stations, and the turnout is usually fatal. Whether the clothing is new designer clothing or old thrift store clothing, kids are negatively affected by this mentally or physically, from other students. Future crimes like these could be prevented, if schools implement a policy for uniforms to be worn by each student. The U.S. Department of Education (2006) conducted a series of surveys on 5 different middle schools across the U.S., which has recently implemented school uniform policies. The 5
