GEORGIA TECH LORRAINE GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY School of Electrical and Computer Engineering ECE 6543 Fiber Optic Network Spring Semester 2009 Homework #3 Date due: February 23 rd Problem 1 Problem 4.7 p. 276 Optical Networks 2nd Edition Problem 2 A PIN photodiode is receiving a sinusoidally modulated signal at 1.55 μ m given by P ( t ) = P 0 (1 + m cosωt ). The photodiode is connected to a trans-impedance amplifier through a 50 Ω resistor. The responsivity R is 0.8 A/W and the modulation index m is 1/2. The photodiode operates at 25 C. Assuming P 0 is -20 dBm: 1. Give the expression of the mean-square signal current < i 2 s > as the sum of a dc component and a signal current. 2. Estimate the value of the noise sources. 3. Estimate the signal to noise ratio for a detector bandwidth of 50 MHz. We assume that the dc component is filtered out. Problem 3 At the receiver the discrimination between 0 and 1 symbol is done by comparing the detected voltage with a threshold voltage v th . To

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
