BB 3140 Evolution Term B 2009 Course Outline Chapter 1 History of Evolutionary Biology I. Early ideas A. The "great chain of being" 1. Species have fixed (unchanging) properties 2. The universe of objects ("creation") is arranged in an orderly fashion, a hierarchy of complexity a. inanimate objects b. simple life forms c. higher life forms d. humans 3. The gradation is complete and without gaps 4. The role of natural science is to catalog the great chain of being II. Lamarck's (1744-1829) transformational theory of organic progression (1802, 1809) (Fig. 1.3A) A. Allowed the idea of changes in species over time B. Species originate by "spontaneous generation" 1. This process is ongoing, not just a single moment of creation C. Once formed, species progress over time up the great chain of being to higher forms. D. Lower forms were created more recently and have not progressed as far as those created earlier E. Species progress through the action of a "nervous fluid" F. Inheritance of acquired characteristics 1. Characteristics acquired through use during the lifetime of an individual are inherited (giraffe's neck example) 2. "nervous fluid" enters into most used parts and enlarges them 3. This idea was not original with Lamarck III. Darwin's (1809-1882) variational theory of the origin of species A. Studied natural sciences at Cambridge University 1. Interested in natural history 2. Had false starts as a medical student and a student for a careers in the religious clergy B. Joined an expedition on H.M.S. Beagle , a British Naval ship assigned to chart the waters of South America (1831-1836) 1. Served as expedition naturalist 2. Collected specimens and made observations on biology and
