Why is it important for occupational therapists to have an understanding about gait? “Walking impairment or disability can interfere with an individual’s ability to participate in ADL’s, even though walking does not in itself directly fulfill any fundamental functions of ordinary everyday activity such as sleeping, washing, dressing, eating, and working. In all human societies, however, these activities take place in specific locations where the fundamental activities of daily life take place.” Perry J, Garrett M, Gronley J, Mulroy S. Classification of walking handicap in the stroke population. Stroke 1995; 26: 982-989
