WHY SHOULD WE  CARE  ABOUT   SCIENCE? Different way of thinking (critical evaluation of data and hypotheses). Intellectual curiosity about universe. Knowledge about environment that affects you every day. Technological advances (by-product of science) improve our lives. Economics (and thus world influence) Personal:  Helps getting a job. Country:  Federal budget includes 30 billion/yr for science. And Armed  forces 300 billion/yr industry.

Has Science Always Been With Us? The terms ‘science’ and ‘scientist’ were not used prior to the 18th/19th Century AD. Before then it was part of ‘natural philosophy’. Science arguably started in Ancient Greece about 600 BC. Remember that as we define science (today’s topic), it is unquestionably different from what it was hundreds or thousands of years ago.

How can we answer the question - ‘What is Science?’ We can approach the question from several perspectives: (1) what is the public (your) perception of science? (2) define different elements of science. (3) what do scientists do? (4) what is non-science? What is technology, common sense? Ways to distinguish science from other disciplines.
