Organic Chemistry 1 – Problem Set #2 – Bonding Name: 1. Draw Lewis dot structures for the following molecules. A) Two isomers of C 4 H 10 B) Three isomers of C 7 H 12 , including one with a ring, and one with a triple bond. C) Cis/trans isomers of (HO 2 C)CHCH(CO 2 H) 2. Compare all of the CO bond lengths in the three species. methanol, CH 3 OH carbon dioxide, CO 2 bicarbonate HCO 3 3. Draw the Lewis structure for CH 2 NH and build a model of it. Are all of the H’s in the same plane? Draw an orbital overlap diagram (show sigma and pi bonds as orbital overlaps). 4. Draw the Lewis structure for CH 2 CNH and build a model of it. Are all of the H’s in the same plane? (Note the difference in the formula for this compound and the one in number 3!) Draw an orbital overlap diagram (show sigma and pi bonds as orbital overlaps).
