Alex Fulton PHIL 2220 Final Deliberative democracy is by far the best way in which to govern a country. It takes into account the ideas and the opinions of all that are affected by the rules and regulations of the government, and incorporates them equally into decision making. The problem with this is that the large population in America makes it near impossible to have a deliberative democracy in which we can all take part in decision making. The solution for this was Congress, but members of Congress don’t always accurately reflect the positions of the people who they represent. I believe that congressmen and women should hold certain discussion sessions exclusively to members of their district in order to hear their ideas and to try and represent them as much as possible in the American government. John Stuart Mill’s “On Liberty” is an influential paper that discusses the right to privacy of individuals in a society and attempts to draw a line at which is it legitimate for a government to interfere in the private lives of citizens.
