Jacob Zippersiten Chemistry 1A 8/25/09 Chemistry Pre Class Assignment 1. a. What can you learn about glucose from the molecular formula? - The molecular formula shows us precisely how many elements compose up glucose. From this, we can effectively determine how many carbon atoms, hydrogen atoms, and oxygen atoms are in glucose. In other words, the molecular formula identifies the main atoms that compose up the certain compound. Then, this formula identifies how many individual atoms of each element are needed in order to create glucose. Therefore, just by looking at the molecular formula, it can be concluded that there are 6 Carbon atoms, 12 Hydrogen atoms, and 6 Oxygen atoms. b. What can you learn about glucose from the structural formula? - The structural formula allows the scientist to visualize where bonds are forming between the different elements. Upon looking at the structural model for Glucose, it can swiftly be noted that there are five atoms of Carbon and one atom of Oxygen combined in the ring. Just by looking
