NAME:   Jake Zipperstein Part I. Middle Voice Instructions: Write as many versions as you can of the “middle voice” of the following statement—given in the active and passive voice. You should consult Barthes’ “To Write” essay. Active: “I killed her.” Passive: “She was killed by me.” Middle: -The girl watched me kill her. -The girl watched herself get killed. -I watched myself kill her. -She stood there as she was killed. -He stood there as he killed her . Part II. Paraphrasing (again) Instructions : Paraphrase each passage. Do NOT overlook the fact that these quotes are extracted from the assigned reading, which is to say: they’ve been decontextualized. Your task is to resituate, if not in fact explain, the quote, as you re-write it in your own words. You must be selective (i.e. which words do you focus on, which phrase, etc.?), yet you must likewise elaborate… such that you’re, in effect, conveying to your reader why this quote matters, as much as what it says.
