Poverty is a global problem that has recently been affecting a large part of the world’s population. Some believe that we have no obligation to help these people, but in fact it is our problem just as much as theirs. I believe that we are required to help out our fellow humans with our excess funds and surplus goods, but not for humanitarian reasons. Humanitarians believe that we are required to share certain common goods with our fellow human beings, and therefore have to give food to the hungry. I, on the other hand, believe that our major role in maintaining the poverty and poor living conditions of these third-world countries is the reason that we are compelled to help these people. Thomas Pogge offers a very similar approach to the problem of global poverty. Pogge argues that because we are violating negative duties to not harm the poor, we have an obligation to help alleviate poverty worldwide. To understand his argument we must first understand what a positive duty and a negative duty is. A positive duty is a requirement to help something, whereas a negative duty is a requirement to not harm. Pogge argues that since our affluence is at the expense of developing nations, we have a duty to help them with their famine problems. Many would disagree and say that the problems of developing nations have nothing to do with the affluent Western world, but Pogge disagrees. He claims that the global order
