UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering EEN 204 Name: ___________________ Section: Date: ___________________ EXPERIMENT 9 THE 555 TIMER PURPOSE: The main purpose of the lab is to familiarize the student with integrated IC circuits using the popular 555 timer chip. The first mode of operations the student will be introduced to is the Astable Operation or Free Running mode. In this mode, the out put of the circuit is a square wave whose controlled by two resistors and an external capacitor C attached to IC chip. The second mode is the Monostable Operation or One Shot where the out put is delayed by a specific time using one resistor and one capacitor. Experimental Procedure I. Astable Operation (Free Running): A 555 timer circuit is shown in Fig. 12.1 with the connections to operate it in free running mode. In this mode, the output of the timer will be a square wave of frequency and duty cycle that depends on the external components. These parameters can be calculated from the following
