ICT212 STUDY NOTES STUDY UNIT 1 SIM UNIVERSITY SU1-1 SUMMARY OF UNIT 1 This is the Unit 1 for the course Internet Security . There are altogether two chapters: Chapter 4 and Chapter 5. Chapter 4 discusses Authentication Applications and covers Kerberos and X.509 Authentication Services. The material in this chapter is pretty interesting, as it provides the students some insight into protocol design. It discusses the issues a security protocol tries to address and how certain constructs are being developed to address those issues. Chapter 5 concerns email security. The importance of emails in the contemporary society needs not be further emphasized. This application is one of the most important communication mechanisms both in the workplace and in an individual’s personal life. In this chapter we shall discuss Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) and Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME). Many of the ideas in these schemes are applicable to other security solutions as well. Study Guide for UNIT 1 Chapter 4 Authentication Applications We will cover just the basics but not the details. The precise knowledge of the actual protocol (e.g. the actual messages exchanged on Page 102 1 and Page 110) will not be required. Emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the concepts rather than memorizing the details. For X.509, the emphasis will be on certificates and how they are being handled (Page 113 – 117). For the material from Page 118 – 120, the students just need to know there are three different ways of authentication. The details are not required. X.509 Version 3 will not be discussed. The students are highly encouraged to understand the material in the following pages in the reference text thoroughly: Page 95 – 113, Page 113 – 120. Chapter 5 Electronic Mail Security Students will need to know both PGP and S/MIME. The emphasis is more on the latter topics but the concepts in PGP are important as well. In particular, for this topic, students need to understand the main ideas discussed in Page 132 – 135, Page 138 – 150. For S/MIME, the concepts behind RFC822 and MIME are essential pre- requisite to the understanding of S/MIME. Thus the main ideas covered in Page 151 – 156 are useful. The S/MIME discussion is covered in Page 159 – 166. 1 The page numbers in this section ( only ) refer to those in the reference text.
