In the staff portion of the organization, five staff personnel report to the president, four staff report to each vice president, three staff report to each manager, and two staff report to each foreman. Determine (a) the number of direct labor workers, (b) the total number of staff personnel, and (c) the total number of employees in the organization. Solution : (a) The employees in each category are as follows: Position Number of line Number of Staff President 1 5 Vice President 4 4 x 4 = 16 Manager 4 x 5 = 20 20 x 3 = 60 Foreman 20 x 6 = 120 120 x 2 = 240 Direct labor workers 120 x 10 = 1,200 There are 1200 direct labor workers. (b) Total number of staff workers = 5 + 16 + 60 + 240 = 321 (c) Total number of employees = 1 + 4 + 20 + 120 + 1,200 + 321 = 1,666 27.5 An army division has 16,000 foot soldiers.
