Lecture 1 This chapter provides you with a brief introduction to the study of finance, along with some key concepts  that are really important in this class. The Divisions of Finance o Financial institutions – is concerned with the institutional aspects of the discipline, which  encompass the creation of financial assets, the markets for trading securities, and the regulation of  financial markets. o Investments – is concerned with the analysis of individual assets and the construction of well- diversified portfolios.  It encompasses financial planning, specifying the investor’s financial goals,  analyzing various securities that the individual may acquire, and constructing diversified  portfolios. o Corporate finance – emphasizes the role of the financial managers.  Note that these divisions of finance are arbitrary and overlap.
