Religion in Ancient Israel January 22, 2008 The Stories of Creation TA: ryan.bailey@mail.mcgill.ca Widely accepted that Genesis has combined 2 different stories Probably composed by preistly editor (1 st Story) The contrast between the two is clearly evident in the two accounts of creation 1 st -rather dry, formulaic ritualistic style 2 nd -more colourful, folksy, Yahwistic account The order of creation is reversed The Priestly Creation Story In the beginning god created the heaven and the earth (KJV) In the beginning WHEN god created the heaven and the earth (NRSV) o The when means there was something before Rhe babylonian creation myth, Enuma Elish, similarly begins wiht a temporal clause If the opening words are translated as a temporal clause it is clear that we are not speaking of creation out of nothing The earth was formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while the wind from god swept over the face of the water (NRSV) // and the spirit of god moved upon
