Religion of Ancient Israel January 11, 2010 Stories of genesis are detailed in regards to women Questions about biblical text: Contents Faith Covenant Theology Historical When/where/about who was it written Literary Purpose of the author/message Structure, characters Trying to find out when the stories were written: going back to the 2 nd millennium BCE The earliest possible date is the time of creation BCE 4000=creation 2766-1805=patriarchs 1876-1446=Egyptians 1446=exodus 1446-1406=40 years in the desert 1406-1050= conquest of Canaan + judge 1050-937=United Kingdom, King Solomon 527=exile from Babylon From 1050-587=very important time period in the history of Israel pg.21 Text supports the aspects of the kings of Israel Exile 527 from Babylon First temple in Jerusalem Pg 86, 87 Parallel texts from ancient cultures Give parallels but arguments that different stories during the same period give the same narratives and structures Some are more poetic and literary, some are historical, and some are legal Historical texts: Jacob and Esau Talks about servants

More women and men and are mentioned with their names and professions At the end of the text they speak about Asiatic people, mentioned as servants in the 13 th dynasty in Egypt Another very early time in Egypt Fits with the dates that the biblical stories offer us They not only support didn’t texts but they describe certain influences Pg 89-90- period of the patriarchs Very broad dating of the patriarchs Middle bronze or late bronze period Predates Egypt and the exodus- historical If you look for archeological evidence we need to look at late bronze excavation sites (pg 92,93) We are dealing with the late bronze period, it more or less supports the date of 1440 which is the day of exodus Probability that the patriarchs were from this period but they may not have been called the patriarchs. Might have been a group of Asian people What does it mean to write a story: Need a language, need an alphabet Need material: the invention of the pen, paper (stone tablets, parchment, ink) need people who know how to produce these material Need scribes who can read and write Need some sort of society organization Need an audience, author This is enough to tell a story, to write a story in a small scale society, a tribe with some sort of organization and material to write a story This is how scholar imagine the beginning of biblical text, as storytelling and more as oral stories and oral traditions= the oral torah The origins of the bible are oral traditions that are eventually written down Tribes moved from one place to another place, brining their stories to different audiences, can talk about themselves and about their ancestors Hard to prove because we can only prove things that are material objects: written down
