Listen • Speak • Engage San José State University Communication Studies Comm 20, Public Speaking, Section 18, Spring 2010 Instructor: Krista Nilsen Office location: HGH 257 Telephone: 408-924-5464 Email: Krista.Nilsen@ymail.com Office hours: Thursday 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and by appointment Class days/time: Mondays and Wednesdays 4:30 to 5:45 PM Classroom: HGH 219 General Education Category A1 Catalog Description Speaking principles of rhetoric applied to oral communication; selecting, analyzing, adapting, organizing and delivering ideas effectively. Electronic Documents I will provide electronic copies of documents needed for this class. Electronic documents will be sent to the email you provide the instructor during the first week of class. It is your responsibility to let your instructor know if you are experiencing any issues with receiving these electronic documents. You are responsible for checking your email no later than Sunday of each week. Course Goals Effective public speaking skills are essential for members of a democratic society. In this course, you will develop strategies for designing well-organized, researched, extemporaneous speeches on topics of social significance adapted to a diverse audience. The speaking engagements, in-class activities, small group discussions, and speeches allow you to practice and critique your oral communication skills as well as observe and evaluate those of others. Readings, lectures, written assignments and class discussions serve as resources for you as you develop your public speaking abilities and become more at ease when addressing an audience. Course Learning Objectives After successfully completing this course, you will: L.O.1. Identify and assess socially significant and intellectual topics, then compose and deliver extemporaneous oral presentations (using note cards or key-word outlines) on those topics. L.O.2. Engage in critical and analytical listening. L.O.3. Analyze audiences, adapt oral presentations to diverse audiences and use that information to accomplish the purpose of the speech. L.O.4. Assume the ethical responsibilities of the public speaker, including basic understanding of the economic, legal and social issues surrounding the access and use of information.
