Instructions: Using the rules for comma punctuation in Hacker, place the commas in the follow- ing text. In the last few pages of his History of the Indians of New Spain Fray Toribio de Benavente known as Motolinía discusses the Inquisition’s hunt for “idols” in Mexico: In each town they had an idol or demon whom they con- sidered and called their principal patron this one they honored and adorned with many jewels and robes. . . . These principal idols that I speak of the Indians concealed in the most secret place they could as soon as the great city of Mexico was taken by the Span- iards. . . . When they were questioned about the prin- cipal idols and their dress they would dig one up all rotten--of which I am a good witness for I saw it hap- pen many times. . . . In the years ’39 and ’40 some Spaniards--some of them with authority and some of them without it--to show that they were zealous in the Faith and thinking that they were doing something worthwhile began to stir things up and disinter the dead and put pressure upon the Indians to make them give up their idols. . . . Mingled with the righteous zeal that they displayed in hunting for the idols
