CE154 Hydraulic Design Homework Problem #1 – Coyote Creek Project (1) Assuming the drainage area and probable-maximum-precipitation distribution for the Upper Coyote Creek watershed in San Jose, California are shown on Figure HW1-1. You are the project engineer responsible for the design of a reservoir at the outlet of this watershed. One of the hydrologic data items that you need is the design flood hydrograph. Since the watershed is heavily populated and a failure of the dam will cause significant loss of lives and properties, you have decided that it is appropriate to use PMP for the reservoir design. Applying this precipitation pattern uniformly over the watershed, compute the design rainfall distribution over time using HMR 58. Figure 2.13 of HMR 58 for depth-area relations of the San Jose area is also attached. (2) Assuming the topographic contours for the watershed are as shown on Fig. HW1-2, and the average Manning’s coefficient for the watershed is 0.120, use the S-graph method of the Bureau of Reclamation to compute the synthetic design flood hydrograph for the dam.
