San Jose State University Additional Readings Middle East Studies Program Dr. Mira Z. Amiras Middle Eastern Traditions Recommended Readings The following books should be considered only a starting point for further research on the Middle East and North Africa and religion—particularly Islam—in the Middle East. The list is uneven in part because the literature itself is uneven. For example, you will find many volumes on Sufism in the bookshops but few on Shi’ism. For early works, a good place to look for additional readings is in the bibliography of Marshall Hodgeson’s three volumes on The Venture of Islam . There are also numerous journals, newspaper articles and internet sites which will be of use. Keep in mind that sources are of uneven quality, so please read critically.
