W HAT IS REASONING ? What to consider: the validity of your claims based on evidence We’ll discuss four patterns of reasoning: inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, causal reasoning, and reasoning by analogy We use reasoning to link the evidence we are presented with to claims we make about that evidence The same evidence can be used for multiple, even conflicting, claims.

I NDUCTIVE REASONING Assumption of an orderly universe Collecting instances to establish a pattern Recognize the meaning of a probability: how could my inference be wrong? Your task is to convince the audience that the conclusion you arrived at is probable enough for their acceptance Cost-reward analysis (risk and reward): the levels of enoughness and risks and benefits perceived.
