1 EDSE 224 Lecture 7: Teachers and the Environment An Appropriate Learning Environment for Second Language Learners with Disabilities Environments where second language learners flourish are unique. Some of the elements of a successful environment include: teachers, learning styles, physical arrangements, materials, and grouping. Our responsibility as instructors of second language learners is to ask ourselves and the researchers we meet: 1. Is this true for second language learners as well as for the correction or remediation of learning disabilities, for monolinguals as well as for students learning a second language? 2. Are the methodologies to teach native speakers equally effective for second language learners? 3. Is learning through a second and much weaker language effective for comprehension?
