CE 140 Soil Mechanics Homework Assignment #1 Assigned: 27- January Due: 5-February Problems: 1. A 5-story office building is to be built on a level site with no apparent anomalies. The building is to be 130 feet by 75 feet and the footings are anticipated to be 6 feet to 8 feet square. Estimate the number of borings and their depths necessary to characterize the site. Draw a site map (to scale) and identify where you would place these borings within the building footprint. Provide a brief summary why you chose the locations/layout you specify. 2. A level building is to be built at the site shown in the figure below by cutting and filling as shown. The final pad elevation is to be 215 feet. Then, a three-story steel-frame office building is to be built. Five exploratory borings have been drilled to determine the subsurface conditions.
