San Jose State University College of Education Department of Special Education *********************************************************************** * EDSE 218: Evidence-Based Best Practices for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders *********************************************************************** * College of Education Mission Statement The mission of the College of Education at San Jose State University is to prepare educators who have the knowledge, skills, dispositions and ethics that ensure equity and excellence for all students in a culturally diverse, technologically complex, global community. Department of Special Education Mission Statement The Department of Special Education prepares professionals to be competent in educating individuals with special needs from birth to adulthood across a variety of environments. We accomplish this goal in collaboration with faculty members from the Department of Teacher Education and service providers, and together we promote equity and excellence in our curricula for all our students. Course Description: This course includes the theoretical foundations and application of evidence-based best practices for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) including social language interventions, social stories, integrated playgroups, positive behavior support, self- advocacy skills, inclusive education, recreation and leisure, and special interventions for young children. Course Objectives: The students will 1. state the characteristics and typical behaviors demonstrated by individuals who have ASD 2. describe the historical sequence of the identification of ASD and the interventions associated with these disabilities 3. identify the components and describe the theoretical foundation of Social Stories 4. design a Social Story for an individual with autism spectrum disorder 5. discuss and summarize the importance of social language for students with ASD 6. learn and answer questions about social cognitive skills and the stages of these skills that typical individuals learn growing up, and articulate the challenges that individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome experience in this area

7. articulate the fundamentals and theoretical background of social cognition skills, and design formal and informal interventions for individuals with Aspergers Syndrome to learn social cognitive skills 8. describe the critical features and structure of Integrated Playgroups 9. design informal positive behavior support plans for students with ASD 10. describe the common sensory integration needs of children with ASD and strategies for the educator 11. the theoretical background of and characteristics of Stanley Greenspan’s “Floor Time” 12. design the components of a plan to teach self-advocacy skills to a student with ASD 13. demonstrate collaborative strategies for inclusive education 14. modify general education curriculum and instruction for individuals with ASD included in general education and employment settings
