SOC 104 – 2010 DUE DATE Quantitative Research Methods SPSS EX5 – Creating an Index An index is a measure of a single general concept or dimension that is composed of several individual items. The purpose of this assignment is to take the empathy variable and create one empathy index using SPSS. For this assignment you will be working with the variables: emapthy1, empathy3, empathy2R, and empathy4R. The first two are in your original SPSS database. The last two you should be in there from SPSSEX3, if not then you need to refer back to that assignment and create them. Before we can begin making the index we need to clean up the data set a little bit. For some reason the original empathy variables do not have 8 “Don’t Know” as a missing variable. We need to fix that. You should already know how to do that but just in case you don’t find the variable “empathy1”, go to and click on the missing column, and in the box next to the box that has a 9 in it enter 8. Repeat this for all of the empathy and
