Vietnam I. Basic Facts A. Official name: Socialist Republic of Vietnam B. Capital: Hanoi C. Language: Vietnamese is the official one. English has become the second language. There are places that speak some French, Chinese and Khmer. D. Government type: Communist E. National holiday: Independence Day from the French (1945) – September 2. F. History: - 111 BC: China conquered the northern part of Vietnam. This became a great influence on Vietnamese culture. - 939 AD: the Ngo Dynasty – Ngô Quy n expelled the Chinese. - 1009-1225: the Lý Dynasty – Vietnamese art and culture flourished. They also fought against 3 Mongol invasions and Buddhism was first practiced. - 1407 – 1428 : China’s Ming dynasty conquered the north. Lê L i led resistance groups that finally expelled the Chinese and established the Lê dynasty, also called Đ i Vi t , which ruled for more than 300 years. - 1859 – 1885: Series of French conquests.
