Kavanagh-Stein, Erika Political Science Dorabji T/TH 7:30 am MLK speech 2/6/07 Similarities between Vietnam War and Iraq War Dr. King spoke of the poor being forgotten once the war began building  up. This reminded me of how the poor suffered after Katrina because our  President’s focus was on the war. Martin Luther King also spoke of the fact that a majority of the soldiers that  went off to fight came from poor families, the same is true today. Another similarity between the two wars is that neither is popular with the  people. Before both wars America supported a dictator instead of who the people  of that country wanted as their leader. “Where are the roots of the independent Vietnam we claim to be building?”  –MLK, the same can be said of Iraq. “We are adding cynicism to the process of death, for [the soldiers] must  know after a short period there that none of the things we claim to be
