Lecture 3: The Process, Stages, and Challenges of Second Language Acquisition Second language learners become involved in a process that is both rewarding and frustrating. Initially, a frustrating experience, the process eventually opens communication pathways for the learner to interact effectively with speakers of the target language. While the beginning stages are very difficult for most learners and can be very discouraging, the learner must live with and a sense of incapacity until she/he can operate free of the restrictions imposed by the unknown or partially known language. Once this period of discomfort is overcome, a positive sense of accomplishment drives the learner into exploring more complexities of the language extending his/her new language skills in an effort to match those of native speakers. With the task of studying and acquiring a language comes the challenges of: 1. identification 2. acceptance. 3.
