Somalia – A “Lawless State?” - Somalia split between Somalia, Kenya (NFD), Ethiopia (ogaden), and Dijibouti. - Despite the many conflicts, Somalia is actually very homogenious - The animals emphasized in the herding of Somalia are more of camels, than normal cattle - Oil is at stake in their conflict. - The south is more of an agricultural land. - The ethnic groups of Somalia speak the same language with some differences in dialect and have the same Islamic religion Somali Kinship - Founding father samaale, connect to prophet - Six clan-familiies or “tribes” (30 gen_ - Clans = Subunits (20 gen) - Primary Lineages (6-10 gen) o Exogamous (marry out) - Diya Group o 4-8 Generations o Pay and receive “blood money.” (often in terms of camels) - Matrifocaility Traditional Conflict Management - Culture of confrontation -> Godob (revenge for cumulative grievances) An eye for an eye. - Council of elders (xeer) with powers of expulsion, holy men. They often negotiated peace and settlements between conflicted clans. -
