Professor Salazar Cultural Anthropology Anth 11 Spring 2010 Ethnographic Exercise #2: Culture and Space This assignment is about how living spaces are structured or shaped by culture. In order to complete it you need to visit a home, such as that of your parents/guardians, a close friend, or the dorm room, house or apartment in which you currently live. Imagine that you are a foreign anthropologist conducting fieldwork in the United States. As part of this study you are conducting fieldwork in this dwelling space, where your goal is to learn what you can about culture in the U.S. Walk from room to room, noting how the rooms are laid out and the items in each. Choose five rooms or spaces (you can include yards, garage, workshop, etc.) from which you think you can learn something about culture. Inventory the items in them and draw a map of the home. Briefly describe the appearance of each room and space. The following questions are offered as a way to stimulate your thinking about
