CmpE 102 – HW#1 (Spring 2010) – SOLUTIONS Introduction & Chapter 1 Problems 1. Define firmware. Firmware can be defined as embedded application software that resides in re- programmable non-volatile memory on an embedded target board. 2. Contrast the features of a debugger and emulator. Debugger : software routine that executes processor instructions, logical check of code, single-step or run to a preset breakpoint, view register and memory contents, no I/O or interrupts. Emulator : hardware that executes instructions at full-speed exactly as the target processor, logical check of code, single-step or run to a preset breakpoint, view register and memory contents, I/O and interrupts code can be run, trace buffer so that code errors can be easily traced to their source. 3. List the common installed software on a PC for firmware development. Text editor, assembler, compiler, linker, link libraries, downloader, up-loader, debugger, and re-locator. 4. Showing all your steps, perform the following number conversions: a. C0E unsigned hexidecimal ? decimal ? decimal = (12 x 16 2 ) + (14 x 16 0 ) = 3086 b. C0E signed hexidecimal ? decimal ? decimal = 2’s complement of C0Eh = 3F2h

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
