Chapter 10 Motivating Employees and Building Self Managed Teams Happy vs. unhappy employee Motivating employees is key. Intrinsic rewards- personal satisfaction you feel when you perform well and complete goals. Extrinsic rewards- something given to you by some one else as recognition for good work. Fredrick Taylor - Called the father of scientific management 1911 “the principles of scientific management” “Best way, best practices” treated people as machines Scientific study of how to do things more efficiently- scientific management Must have time, methods and rules of work Time motion studies Dominant strategy for improvement in early 1900’s The Hawthorn Study Elton Mayo- Harvard University Workers productivity under different lighting- but there seemed to be a problem He put people in groups, each group in different environments, including a control group, where he thought productivity would drop it actually increases.
