Final Questions for Psyc 190 Bob Cooper – Spring 2010 Introduction for questions 1, 2, and 3. Contributions to psychology can be broadly grouped into three main categories (Omnia Gallia in tres partes divisa est): theoretical, basic research and knowledge, and applied understanding. For example, although Freud is not now held in high regard by many psychologists, no one can deny that he stimulated a great deal of theoretical development in psychology, his theory stimulated a great deal research (much of which did not support his theory), and his theory led to a variety applications. Among the concepts that championed that are still in use to day are the unconscious and defense mechanisms. 1. Consider the contributions of Social Learning Theory with respect to these categories (you may focus on Bandura’s version if you like). How has it influenced theoretical development in psychology? How has it influenced our basic research and understanding? How has it influenced applied psychology. Which, if any, of the original concepts are still used today. Fifty years from now what do you anticipate will still be seen as lasting contributions. 2. Consider the contributions of Festinger and the concept of cognitive dissonance with respect to these categories (you may focus on Bandura’s version if you like). How has it influenced theoretical development in psychology? How has it influenced our basic research and understanding? How has it influenced applied psychology. Which, if any, of the original concepts are still used today.
