Dr. Soo Choi Anth146 TTh4:30 12/10/08 Book Review: Anne Fadiman – The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down In Fadiman’s book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, tells the story of a Hmong family traveling to the United States to establish a new life. The in-depth analysis of the family’s beliefs proves to be very strong and different from that of the American culture. The author goes into great detail of how the family was introduced to so many new concepts, procedures, foods, and medical practices. The main plot of their stories revolves around the family’s relationship with the American medical community. The Hmong have a different approach to medicine and healing, so upon the family’s arrival, much of the western medical practices were upsetting. It is nearly unbearable to imagine that the family was being introduced to so many things for their first time; meanwhile, they remain illiterate without knowing how to speak English. I feel as though the book does a terrific job of explaining why and how the family began their journey to the United States. Furthermore, Fadimann also gets into great details of how the family maintained their true heritage, even after moving to the United States. Lastly, the story continues to touch our hearts as the family must fight for their daughter’s life as she gets diagnosed with epilepsy. The Hmong people have been living throughout East Asia for quite some time. The largest population of Hmong lived in China for roughly the past four thousand years. They have been known to stretch as far Southeast Asia to Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.
