English 1B Section 45 Spring 2009 Mini Analysis #1- Editorial Analysis “A Better Stimulus Bill” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/10/opinion/10tue1.html?ref=opinion Published: February 9, 2009 Map of Argument: Claim: President Obama is right that Congress needs to quickly pass a stimulus bill. But a bill that is merely better than nothing won’t be nearly good enough. Reasons: They must include the most effective provisions; those that provide powerful stimulus and help those Americans who are most in need. Support: Adequate increases in unemployment benefits and food stamps generally the two most effective forms of stimulus are necessary within the plan. Logic: The economy is too fragile. And the numbers are too huge. Analysis of Argument: The author agrees with the necessity of a stimulus package to help jump start the economy once again. He begins with generalizations, statements and reasons of which he believes the package is necessary. Then slowly his reasons and support become more and more specific. He doesn’t want just any kind of package for the American people, he wants the right package. He states some must haves in that package including the 40 Sepassi 2
