JS 196e Announcements and Assignments 013107 Announcements Friday 2 Feb: Guest lecture by Dr. Sandra Sachs of San Francisco Medical Examiners Office on the Chemistry of Methamphetamine Friday 9 Feb: Guest lecture by Dr. Chris Chen of CCNY on nanotechnology 1 point extra credit for attending and writing a 500 word summary Dr. Sandra B. Sachs “The Chemistry of Speed:Methamphetamine in Society” Methamphetamine has been a growing problem in the United States, both in terms of the rise in illegal manufacture, but also by increasing numbers of abusers. Some recent federal regulations have been enacted to counter this, namely the DEA’s “Combat Methamphetamine Act of 2006”. This talk will cover the chemical aspects of methamphetamine manufacturing in the so-called Clandestine Laboratory. It will also cover new ways the speaker has developed to analyze data derived from Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) for methamphetamine and chemically similar (isomeric) molecules.
