Abstract For this experiment, we attained a set of pins labeled D to measure and record five sample diameters where each had five pins. Along with us, four other groups attained other pin sets where every group had to collaborate to get each other’s data. The way we did this was by using a digital caliper to find the diameter for each pin and recorded the data to an Excel program. Based on the data recorded and received from the other groups, we found that even though each pin was supposed to be a certain diameter, there was a variance in size. Some reasons for this might be due to an error in technique for how the pins were measured or the manufacturing process differed within the pins itself. 2

Background and Objectives In many cases, when things are mass produced or manufactured by referencing a dimension sheet, sometimes the final dimensions are not exactly what they should be. However, sometimes the product might be perfectly made to specification but when actually inspecting the dimensions, the measuring tool itself may not be calibrated. In a lot of cases, the user may use the measuring device improperly affecting the displayed measurement. In order to investigate these different possibilities, the experiment will allow seeing how extreme the variance in diameter is within different pin samples. It also gives the opportunity to make students aware and familiarize the measuring tool of a caliper. With the data acquired from the different measurements, other groups will do the same and share their data. This gives the students a good practice of working with other people and working with MS excel program. With this program, students will be able to learn how to incorporate other student’s data into a single chart and graph to come up with a conclusion to the experiment. Through this conclusion, students will also learn what the process of being “in control” and “out of control” means in terms of the results of this data 1 .
