Recovery Process Recovery Process ADA Position Paper Outline o How it all started o 4 phases of recovery o Treatment approaches o Therapists recovered from EDOs o Phases of nutrition therapy o “Being thin is healthy” o “A lot of exercise is better than none” o “I’m fine” o “Everyone diets” Put the EDO self out of a job Assumptions about EDOs o ED behaviors are symptoms of underlying issues within the person or family o If issues are resolved, food relationships will normalize o Recovery is more than just behavior change; it involves personal growth & life mgmt skills o Without resolving underlying issues, recurrence of symptoms is likely o A binge episode recurrence can indicate a need for new problem solving o Even in obesity, wt loss is not an indicator of recovery The Recovery Model o Phase 1: Symptom Development o Phase 2: Denial o Phase 3: Need for Behaviors o Phase 4: Decreasing Need for Habit Cessation of Food- and Weight-Related Behaviors Recovery Phase 1: Symptom Development o Person is experimenting with food- and weight-related behaviors o Usually 6 months to one year o In the beginning, person may not have ED o By end of phase, she often does have ED o Key factor– does the behavior yield benefits? o If yes, she begins to need her behaviors o Fusion– progressive process of need intertwined with behaviors Phase 2: Denial o Behaviors are no longer just physical behaviors but now done for emotional
