Course Description Applies nursing process to acute and chronically ill adult clients using the clients approach. Concepts include oxygenation, circulation, digestion/elimination, and mobility. Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course the student will: 1. identify rationale for the care of clients across the health care continuum; 2. use the documentation and charting method appropriate to the health care agency; 3. use guidelines provided to safely administer non-parenteral and parenteral medications; Practicum I – NURS 44, Spring 2009 (rev. 11-2008) Page 1 of 8

4. safely perform basic skills previously learned in NURS 53 and concurrently in NURS 54; 5. complete a total biopsychosocial assessment on clients across the health care continuum; using a systems approach; 6. use a framework for culturally competent nursing care that identifies the health care beliefs, practices; and behaviors of clients of diverse ethnic backgrounds; 7. identify resources and guidelines for assessing, documenting, and reporting abuse of older individuals; 8. demonstrate methods of time management by using a written tool to develop treatment plans to prioritize, organize, and perform nursing actions; 9. provide therapeutic interventions that are congruent with the client's developmental stage; 10. demonstrate basic concepts of body substance precautions in client care; 11. safely assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care of assigned clients; 12. demonstrate safe implementation of nursing care and professional behaviors; 13. perform health assessments as a basis for providing professional nursing care to adults and older adults; 14. document references and resources to support nursing interventions; 15. participate in at least one primary care activity in a community based organization; 16. recognize discharge planning needs using the nursing process; 17. apply the Nurse Practice Act and Standards of care while providing basic professional nursing care; 18. begin to apply appropriate data for one client using the client's chart, flow charts, healthy care staff, and other available resources.
